Ban Hotel-Houses

Neighborhoods throughout Chicago have been inundated by online, temporary home and room rentals. These online rentals are on the rise and may pose a threat to our community by facilitating pop-up parties and illegal activity. These home-sharing units may also have a negative impact on property values. The quality of life and safety in our community is paramount.  If you and your neighbors would like to avoid home-sharing properties on your block, please follow the guidelines below:

HOUSE SHARE GUIDELINES

An overview of the process of creating a Restricted Residential Zone is available on the Chicago City Clerk’s website. For more detailed information, please see the Restricted Residential Zone Administrative Rules and Chicago Municipal Code Chapter 4-17.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROCESS CREATING A RESTRICTED RESIDENTIAL ZONE

The Municipal Code of Chicago has been amended to allow a legal voter in a precinct containing residentially zoned property to propose to restrict new or additional shared housing units and/or vacation rentals from operating in that precinct. To be eligible, the following requirements must be met:

1. The individual seeking a Petition from the City Clerk must be a legally registered voter in the precinct the individual seeks to restrict; AND

2. The precinct sought to be restricted must contain at least one residentially zoned property with a RS1, RS2, or RS3 designation pursuant to the Chicago Zoning Ordinance. To find out if your precinct qualifies, please see the Chicago Zoning and Land Use Map at: gisapps.cityofchicago.org/ZoningMapWeb/.

RESTRICTION PROCESS OVERVIEW

To begin the process, you must first file a Notice of Intent Form, which can be found HERE.  In addition to meeting the two eligibility requirements identified above, a legal voter seeking to circulate a Petition to restrict new or additional shared housing units and/or vacation rentals in a precinct (“Legal Voter”) must utilize the required steps available on the Chicago City Clerk’s website.
